Government Review of National Curriculum Could Draw on CAISE's Inclusivity Work

17 February 2025

The Department for Education (DfE) is reviewing England's national curriculum, including science, with a focus on increasing diversity. The review is led by Professor Becky Francis, currently seconded from University College London (UCL).

Professor Francis has been made aware of the groundbreaking work at CAISE, particularly its co-created resources that highlight the contributions of historically overlooked figures in science. Efforts are underway to arrange a meeting later this year between Professor Francis (or a member of her team) and Dr. Tippu S Sheriff, the CAISE lead on this initiative, to share insights from this pioneering work.

Dr. Tippu S Sheriff emphasized the impact of these efforts, stating:
"Through the Highlighting Minorities in Chemistry (HMiC) project, we have evidence that our resources have inspired school, college, and undergraduate students who rarely see people who look like them represented in the curriculum."

If successful, this collaboration could help shape a more inclusive national curriculum, ensuring greater representation and inspiration for future generations of scientists.
